Description

Kodo millet, known as varagu in Tamil, is one of the oldest cultivated grains in India with over 3,000 years of agricultural history. Small, light, and incredibly versatile, varagu is a naturally gluten-free grain that works as a direct substitute for rice in everyday cooking. Unpolished and stone-cleaned, our kodo millet comes to you in its most wholesome, chemical-free form.

Why Kodo Millet

  • Good source of protein at approximately 8 to 9g per 100g
  • Rich in dietary fibre at around 9g per 100g for digestion and gut health
  • Low glycaemic index, suitable for diabetics and those managing blood sugar
  • High in polyphenols and antioxidants that help fight oxidative stress
  • Rich in B vitamins, including riboflavin and niacin, for energy metabolism
  • Naturally gluten-free and easy to digest

How to Use

Varagu rice cooks and behaves very similarly to white rice, making it one of the easiest grains to switch to. Use it to prepare varagu sadam, pongal, upma, khichdi, or idli and dosa batter. It has a mild, slightly earthy flavour and a soft texture when cooked. Soak for 30 minutes before cooking for the best results. Cook in cold-pressed gingelly oil for an authentic South Indian finish.

Looking to rotate millets through the week? Pair varagu with barnyard millet (kuthiraivali) and foxtail millet (thinai) for a well-rounded grain routine. For a wholesome daily nutrition drink that includes kodo millet alongside six other grains, our millet health mix is an easy place to start.

No preservatives. No artificial colour. No added flavour.
